"Resurrected Drag Strip" 75-80 Dragway
All through the off season we are looking for news and we came up with the “Lost Drag Strips” series. Each week we were reporting on a closed dragstrip from its beginnings to the end with all the great details of races from glory days. Well, none the less it is not to often that we can report that a “Lost Drag Strip” has been resurrected. Thus is the case with my home track in Monrovia, Maryland. 75-80 Drag-a-way had an awesome 45 year run until its closing in 2005. Owner Bill Wilcom decided to close the gates and retire after having a battle with some bad health. It was a sad day on that October afternoon to watch all the cars go down the track for the last time but it looks like we have new life and a new beginning for 75-80.

Over the past few years there has been plenty of rumors of the reopening but each year netted the same result with the weeds growing taller and the bleacher boards sagging lower. But 2009 seems to be a bit different as there was much activity taking place and the comments about a new race season were sounding better than ever. Well, as of today, it is official and the new website and schedule have been released to the public with a bunch of racing set to take place.

The new owners and operating team have been busy setting concrete barriers and fixing up the old buildings that line the track on both sides. In speaking with J. Crawford, whom has been named the operations manager, he says that there will be a new track surface in the works to hopefully attract some of the fastest cars in the east. A April 3, 2009 opening date is set which will bring back the Friday night tradition that we all came to love.
